Georgia has experienced some record-breaking numbers for precipitation this year and it doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. With nearly 51 inches of total accumulated rainfall, Georgia is experiencing more than double the rainfall they did last year and local contractors are seeing a rise in calls from homeowners with wet basements.
Channel 2's Craig Lucie, visited a homeowner in Decatur , Georgia where basement waterproofing crews were pumping several inches of water out of the home. Craig went0 over a few things homeowners can do to keep water out of the basement, including making sure downspouts and gutters are clear of any debris, as well as routinely checking the entranceway of the basement exit door for water seepage. Local resident Chris S. of Decatur, Georgia has had a leaky basement for more than a decade and said with this year's rainfall, the basement "has to be fixed."
Joe Rusk, a basement waterproofing specialist from AquaGuard Basement Systems was on the job in this Decatur home when Channel 2 stopped by. Rusk gave an explanation of why basements leak, saying: "Typically the reason why basements leak is because the original drainage system clogs, as the water comes into it, sediment comes into it." Rusk also explained how AquaGuard Basement Systems can fix this waterproofing problem. He said they first tap into the foundation blocks to allow any water that's trapped in them to drain out and they then re-install a drainage system that sits on the footing but below the floor. The drainage system is then channeled to a sump pump where the water is then pumped up and out of the home and away from the foundation.
