Basement Waterproofing Issues: Know the Signs

Common Sources of Basement Water Infiltration

Basements have water infiltration for a wide variety of reasons and it’s not always obvious where the water is coming from. Below are some of the most common reasons for basement waterproofing issues.

Foundation Wall Leaks

Wall cracks are usually the number one source of seepage in poured concrete foundations. Fortunately, they are easy to fix for our experts. Many older homes in Georgia were built with materials like brick and stone and held together with mortar. The mortar holding it all together wears away over time, providing easy access for seepage to come into your basement. Keep an eye out for wall moisture, holes in the mortar, and cracks in your foundation.

Seepage from Floor or Walls

Seepage from the floor or walls can also happen quite frequently, especially during heavy downpours and flash flooding. Water will always find the point of list resistance, and basement foundation walls are porous (concrete/brick/stucco/stone), so water can infiltrate your basement through cracks in the floor and cove joints. Be sure to check your walls when you see water on the floor, as it could be pooled water instead.

Sump Pump Problems

Sometimes, a single sump pump can’t handle the job on its own. The pump might not be reliable enough or powerful enough to handle the volume of water pouring in, especially during heavy rains. When this happens water will begin to seep into your basement. If you don’t have a battery backup pump, your basement can also flood during power outages.
