Water always seeks the path or paths of least resistance. This water can get into your home through cracks in the walls and over and under the footer. One that water finds a way into your basement, it is imperative to address several areas to fix the problems.
If one area is repaired while other areas are ignored, water will most often return and continue to expose your home to extensive damage and the value of your home will suffer and create other potential problems.
Water can comes into your basement in the following ways:
From under the footer: It is possible for there to be a small space between the footer and the poured basement floor. Excess water under the home may create pressure resulting in water coming through those areas and into your basement. You may see evidence in the form of wet carpet, wet baseboards or water on your concrete slab.
From Leaking or Sweating Walls: Consistent excell moisture can cause block walls to “sweat” which can cause water to pool inside.
Through floor cracks: Excess water in the soil under your basement floor can create pressure, resulting in water to find its’ way up through the cracks and you can see water on your floor around those cracks.
Through Cracks in Walls and Mortar Joints(between the blocks): Excess moisture in the dirt creates “hydrostatic pressure” can cause the cracks in your walls to leak. If you have block walls, the water may build up inside the blocks, allowing deposits, mildew and other problems as well as water seeping out of the bottom of the wall.
Over the footer: Water can seep in through the cracks between the footer and where the wall sits on it.
