Your Crawl Space Vents Need to Be Sealed

If your crawl space has open vents, chances are you may have a moisture problem on your hands.

In years past, building contractors believed that vents circulated air throughout the crawl space, but recent studies have found that they cause moisture and pest problems.

Outside moisture infiltrating your crawl space breeds mold and mildew, resulting in poor indoor air quality, and it lets in pests.

So, if your crawl space vents aren’t sealed, it may be time to call AquaGuard.

We had Zachary Pate come out to do our initial inspection and quote on our house and he was phenomenal. Extremely helpful. Made sure to be as straightforward as possible about everything. Initially, I was warned by family against aquaguard because they are considered “too pricey.” But I left the initial inspection feeling like the price was extremely fair especially given the warranties they grant on their work. My experience with them so far has been nothing but pleasant.

Excellent work. They finished the job in less time than estimated, even with expanded scope of work. Kurt, Joseph, and Landon cleaned up after themselves, were very professional, and took extra care to make sure we fully understood everything they installed before they left. Very happy with their work.

4 years and 9 months after installation, our pump failed. Aquaguard's representative, Scott Cunningham, arrived on time, advised me that the warranty was in effect for 3 more months and replaced the unit at no cost. Just as the original installation team, Scott was very professional and efficient in his assessment, offer of options, and service. Excellent product and service.

We live in a flood zone and had our crawlspace encapsulated by AquaGuard (flood tight door, sump pump, drainage and dehumidifier) a couple years ago and Hurricane Helene was the first big test — and we are thrilled to share, every penny was worth it! The flood waters were 5+ feet in our backyard all night (completely covering the door), and very little water entered the crawlspace and nothing was damaged. It could’ve possibly saved our actual living space because of the layout of our home if water had risen downstairs. We’re super impressed. Go AquaGuard!

Last year I needed help with water in my crawlspace in Tucker. I called and Taylor Smith came to review the situation. He was very professional in appearance and actions. He inspected and presented his recommendation. Within a very short time, he had a crew on site. The work was done exactly as Taylor recommended. Since that time, there has been no further issues. I would recommend AquaGuard for any of their services and definitely ask for Taylor for your consultation,

Is Crawl Space Encapsulation the Right Solution for Me?

Since your crawl space isn’t a place you regularly visit, damage and mold-growth can go unnoticed. But if you inspect your crawl space and you do find damage, then crawl space encapsulation is the only solution.

AquaGuard’s comprehensive encapsulation repairs, cleans, dries, and protects your crawl space (and your entire home!). It also makes your crawl space usable for storage. Crawl space encapsulation improves your overall air quality and makes your home more energy-efficient.

AquaGuard has over two decades of experience in engineering superior crawl space solutions for your home. Our 20-mil thick vapor barrier, combined with our state-of-the-art sump pumps, dehumidifiers, and interior drainage systems will ensure your home is protected against any moisture that tries to find its way in.

FAQs

Installing a dehumidifier is a crucial part in controlling crawl space moisture. A dehumidifier alone won’t fix all crawl space water and moisture issues, but in conjunction with a crawl space moisture barrier, a dehumidifier can ensure your crawl space is protected from mold damage.

A moisture barrier, sometimes referred to as a vapor barrier, is just part of a complete crawl space encapsulation system. It is a durable liner used to prevent moisture from entering through exposed dirt floors and walls. Our crawl space moisture barrier is a crisp white, 20-mil, 7-layer poly-reinforced liner and is mold resistant, giving you the opportunity to transform your crawl space into usable storage space.

Crawl space encapsulation refers to the process of waterproofing, insulating, sealing, and conditioning the crawl space to eliminate moisture and high humidity issues. The combination of installing an effective drainage system, insulating the crawl space, sealing floors and walls, and adequately dehumidifying the air not only prevents groundwater or wall moisture from entering the crawl space, but it also regulates crawl space humidity and temperature, often making it the most regulated and climate-controlled area in your home!

Though most crawl spaces are seldom used, a wet crawl space could mean problems for the floors above. It’s important to manage crawl space moisture levels to prevent rotting wood, mold growth, high humidity, pests, and other symptoms of a wet crawl space. Luckily, this is easy thanks to a number of crawl space repair and waterproofing solutions provided by AquaGuard Foundation Solutions.

Why You Need to Repair Your Home’s Crawl Space

If your home has open crawl space vents or deteriorating waterproofing measures, then you probably have some problems developing in there. To protect your entire home, you need to make sure your crawl space stays dry and clean. In no uncertain terms, crawl space encapsulation protects you from the following problems:

crawl space water and flooding

Water Damage

Water damage can lead to mold growth, dry rot on your floor joists, and elevated humidity in your home. The first thing we do as waterproofing professionals is repair any prior moisture damage in your crawl space.

Mold in crawl space with rotten floor joists and rusty floor jack

Mold and Mildew Growth

If mold and mildew are in your crawl space, we remediate it. Why? Because mold, especially black mold, can harm your respiratory health. If family members have conditions like asthma, then it can be particularly awful.

Remediating mold and outfitting your crawl space with a vapor barrier and dehumidifier will control the humidity in your home and make it a healthier space.

You can literally breathe easy.

Deterioration

Encapsulation products have a point when they become ineffective. This is natural, but it can harm your home if left unaddressed. It’s important to inspect your crawl space regularly for wear and tear.

If your crawl space waterproofing measures are failing, call AquaGuard today for a free quote on repairs.

Common Crawl Space Repair and Encapsulation Tips & Mistakes

Over the years, we have heard many myths about crawl space encapsulation. It’s important to consult a professional to determine the best solutions for your home. Here are some helpful tips and mistakes to avoid when considering crawl space repair.

General Crawl Space Encapsulation Tips

  • You Need More than a Vapor Barrier: Your crawl space should be encapsulated with a high-quality vapor barrier, but if that’s all you have, then intruding moisture can still cause mold growth. Combine a vapor barrier with an energy-efficient, self-draining dehumidifier and other precautions to control humidity levels.
  • Lower Your Energy Bills: Repairing and encapsulating your crawl space reduces your energy bills. During both summer and winter, your HVAC systems (which are usually located in your crawl space) go into overdrive trying to balance against extreme temperatures. Crawl space insulation and encapsulation reduces the strain on your system, saving you cash.
  • Seal Your Crawl Space Vents: We can’t stress this enough. Vented crawl spaces allow moisture and pests to enter freely, leading to all sorts of damage and potential health problems. Seal open crawl space vents with durable, airtight covers.

Crawl Space Encapsulation Myths

  • Not All Sump Pumps Are Created Equal: Installing a sump pump in your crawl space is a great step towards protecting it from water damage, but not all are alike. Some sump pumps run off your home’s electricity, so a power failure makes it useless. Install a battery-powered backup sump pump to protect your home if something happens.
  • Don’t DIY: While there are many home repair projects that you can DIY, crawl space repair and encapsulation isn’t one of them. Servicing your own crawl space can worsen existing damage. And although many big box retail stores offer crawl space solutions, they’re not always up to professional standards. Leverage the know-how and resources of local professionals, like AquaGuard, who can back up their work with our long-term warranties.
