Over the years, we have repaired more than 5,000 wet basements and witnessed firsthand the devastation water can have on properties. Let us help you reclaim your basement and make the most out of your investment with basement waterproofing solutions.
How to Waterproof a Basement
Complete basement waterproofing involves the combination of multiple basement waterproofing solutions and exterior drainage systems. These solutions work together to keep water out of your home and away from your foundation. This method is used because there are many ways water can get into your basement. The ability to combine solutions to customize your basement waterproofing system ensures you address your home’s vulnerable areas and provide the highest level of protection against flooding.
What Causes Basement Water Problems?
Not every home is vulnerable to the same causes of basement waterproofing. Whereas some homes face frequent torrential downpours and poor landscape grading, others face plumbing leaks and water line ruptures. Due to the wide array of causes of basement flooding, there are a wide variety of basement waterproofing solutions.
To make sure your basement waterproofing system adequately protects your foundation and possessions, you’ll want to identify the causes of basement water problems that your home is most vulnerable to.
The following are the most prominent causes of a wet basement:
- Cracks in foundation walls or floors
- Water heater, washing machine, and plumbing floods
- Water penetration from improperly-channeled roof water or clogged exterior drainage
- Sump pump failure
- Inadequate exterior drainage
- Leaking window sills
Not sure which of these issues your home is facing? Call AquaGuard today to schedule your free home and foundation inspection! Our basement waterproofing contractors can help you identify potential leaks and hazards.

Exterior Basement Waterproofing Solutions
Though interior basement waterproofing is highly sought after, your basement waterproofing system should actually start with exterior water management.
Did you know the number one cause of foundation damage is inadequate exterior drainage? This is typically exuded by ineffective gutters, improperly-channeled roof water, or clogged exterior french drain or alternative drainage systems along the external perimeter of your home’s footing. Without proper water management solutions, your foundation is vulnerable to the damage caused by expansive soils, hydrostatic pressure, and wall leaks. All of these can lead to a long list of problems, including structural foundation damage and basement flooding.
Exterior waterproofing solutions are intended to capture and direct water away from your home’s foundation before it can even make it into your basement. At AquaGuard Foundation Solutions, we offer a variety of options for improving yard and foundation drainage.
A properly functioning gutter system is perhaps the single most important aspect of your home’s water management system. By capturing roof runoff and directing it away from your home, your gutter drainage system prevents water from oversaturating the soil surrounding your foundation. Learn more about AquaGuard’s GutterShutter™ gutter system, a completely seamless gutter, gutter protection, and gutter drainage system that will never clog and never pull away from the home.
Your gutter downspouts are intended to divert water away to a point in the yard where the ground slopes water naturally away from the home. For properties that require their gutter system to displace water further from the home, or for homeowners who desire greater control over their water management, many homeowners opt for downspout extensions. Our patented RainChute EZ® is an above-ground downspout extension that installs easily to direct water away from your foundation. It is a recessed downspout extension that sits flat against the ground. It’s best where the lawn goes up to the foundation since lawn mower traffic won’t hurt it.
Both the RainChute EZ® and RainChute® are designed to clear away leaves and debris, keeping the drainage channel open. With that being said, we typically recommend using an underground downspout extension as it is the best rainwater diversion technique. At AquaGuard, we trench out a subsurface discharge line that extends as far as is needed away from the home for the water to exit out of a simple lawn pop-up escape and naturally slope away from the home. This minimally-invasive process is both functional and aesthetically-pleasing, as pop-up exits blend in well with grass and landscaping and can be easily mowed over.
Can You Waterproof a Basement from the Inside?
When your home was built, an exterior perimeter drainage system – often referred to as a “french drain” – is installed. The problem with exterior drainage systems is that they are perforated to enable water to pass through but can also clog, as they allow fine particles of silt to enter as well. Hence,
After installing exterior water management systems, such as gutters and downspouts, the next step is to look inside the home. Even with perfectly-effective gutters, yard grading (also known as yard slope), and additional exterior waterproofing solutions, there are still opportunities for water to enter and wreak havoc on your basement through wall-floor joints, wall cracks, water lines, and excess humidity. You can waterproof your basement from the inside with solutions such as perimeter drainage systems, sealed and battery-backed sump pumps, dehumidifiers, and vapor barriers!
Interior Basement Waterproofing Systems:
Because most basements flood at the wall-floor joint, AquaGuard recommends installing perimeter drainage systems for basement waterproofing. The WaterGuard® drainage system is installed just under the perimeter edge of the basement floor. It works by capturing all wall and floor water seepage via inlet holes before the water can make it to your basement floor. The water then flows through the drainage pipe to your sump pump where it can be diverted away from your home.
When your home was built, an exterior perimeter drain—often referred to as a french drain may have been installed. The problem with exterior french drainage systems is that they are perforated to allow water to pass through. However, this perforation also allows find particles of silt to enter as well. Our perimeter drainage systems are guaranteed to never clog from silt or roots. The installation process causes no structural damage to your home’s foundation and can be completed in as little as 1-2 days. When all is said and done, your drainage system will be hardly noticeable—hidden by a layer of concrete, only the small upper portion of the wall flange will be visible.
Over time, shifting, settling, and soil expansion may occur and cause stress on concrete foundation walls. Your walls may crack to relieve the stress—though wall cracks can sometimes indicate larger structural damage, if they’re nearly vertical and ½” wide or less, they’re likely cosmetic. Though these cracks don’t create a structural threat, they can lead to basement leaks.
AquaGuard offers wall crack injection repair, during which we fill and seal basement wall cracks with polyurethane foam to provide a long-term solution.

Basement Waterproofing FAQ
Yes! Basement waterproofing services often increase a home’s value by 10% or more. For a $200,000 home, that’s at least a $20,000 increase in home value! Basement floods are a major liability to homeowners, and every measure you take to prevent a flood from occurring is a worthwhile investment.
As we’ve discussed, there are many different causes of basement water problems. Each basement waterproofing solution is made to address one or a few specific causes, but not all of them. It’s important to know what is causing your wet basement so you can address that cause specifically—however, some basement waterproofing companies won’t provide a thorough enough inspection to guarantee the solution they’re installing will actually work. At AquaGuard, we provide free basement and foundation inspections so you know exactly which challenges your basement and foundation are up against.
The cost of your basement waterproofing system will depend on the specific solutions you install. At AquaGuard, we provide free, no-obligation basement waterproofing quotes to help you invest wisely when the time comes.
While basement floods are often covered by flood insurance, basement leaks from ongoing neglect are not. Your insurance company may not cover the costs of basement waterproofing products or installation, either. However, many companies provide incentives for having your basement waterproofed, such as lower flood insurance premiums.
At AquaGuard, we offer lifetime-warranted solutions that are designed to keep your basement dry permanently. Depending on the waterproofing solution designed for your home’s specific needs, we offer a variety of warranties and guarantees to ensure that your basement is safe and dry for years to come. If you have questions about how often you should maintain or replace specific systems, such as dehumidifiers or sump pumps, call AquaGuard today! We can discuss your home’s issues, our products and systems, and schedule an appointment to initiate the process for restoring your peace of mind.
